Ilva steel plant in Taranto faces uncertain future

The future of the Ilva steel plant in Taranto is under debate as stakeholders weigh the necessity of maintaining primary steel production via blast furnaces versus transitioning to a tertiary center for steel rolling.

Maintaining primary steel production is considered vital for Italy's industrial sovereignty. Unlike secondary steel produced from scrap, primary steel made from virgin iron ore provides the extreme purity, strength, and surface quality required by critical sectors such as automotive, white goods, energy, and large-scale infrastructure. A loss of this capacity could force Italian manufacturers to rely on imports from countries like China or India.

Claudio Cioetto, president of Confimi Apindustria Verona, has stated that while a consortium of Italian companies is a positive sign, state intervention is necessary to protect the site. He warns against a partial solution that only addresses the 'cold area' of the plant, arguing that without the 'hot area' (the core production heart), the facility would be effectively halved, leading to a loss of domestic expertise and competitiveness.
