Imagination Library faces funding shifts following Dolly Parton's death

Following the death of Dolly Parton on August 25, 2026, efforts to sustain her Imagination Library literacy program are facing challenges in Missouri due to state budget cuts. The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education has seen significant funding reductions, including a $4 million loss in the fiscal year 2027 operating budget. Consequently, the state is no longer accepting new applicants for the program, though existing enrollees will continue to receive books until the remaining $2 million in funds is exhausted.

In Colorado, the Early Childhood Council Logan, Phillips, Sedgwick (ECCLPS) is launching a fundraiser to preserve Parton’s legacy and maintain the program’s availability. The ECCLPS is utilizing a ‘Colorado Gives’ page to solicit donations, aiming to sponsor children at a cost of $31 per child annually. The Imagination Library, founded by Parton in 1995, provides free, age-appropriate books to children from birth to age five through a partnership between the Dollywood Foundation and local entities.
