Imathia infrastructure projects face significant delays

Infrastructure development in the Imathia region of Greece faces significant delays regarding two major projects: the vertical axis connection to the Egnatia Odos motorway and the Thessaloniki-Veria-Edessa suburban railway.

The study for the Egnatia-Veria-Naoussa-Skydra connection, originally expected to be completed by June 2023, has seen its deadline for completion of the study alone extended to late 2028 following administrative disputes regarding the connection point.

Simultaneously, the modernization of the Thessaloniki-Edessa railway line has stalled. Despite previous government assurances that electrification for the Platy-Edessa section was included in the 2021-2027 Transport Program, the project was removed from the schedule during a February revision. This has left the line with only three daily service pairs, falling short of modern suburban railway standards.
