Imathia peach producers await answers despite increased research budget
The Greek Ministry of Rural Development and Food has approved an increase in the research budget for the Benaki Phytopathological Institute, raising it from 94,760 euros to 242,500 euros. This funding is specifically designated for the continuation and expansion of research into peach fruit deformation, a problem that has affected producers since 2021.
Despite the increased funding, the United Federation of Agricultural Associations of Imathia has expressed frustration, noting that producers have been waiting years for scientific answers regarding the cause and solution to the deformation. The federation also highlighted that the Institute of Deciduous Trees in Naousa, a key public research body for the region, remains understaffed and lacks necessary equipment and infrastructure.
Farmers in Imathia and Pella are facing additional challenges, including the issue of dry branches, rising production costs, and market prices that often fail to cover expenses. The agricultural associations are demanding immediate updates and concrete solutions to these ongoing issues.
