Greek peach production deformation crisis

Peach producers in Greece are facing significant challenges due to widespread fruit deformation and tree health issues. In the Imathia region, the Greek Ministry of Rural Development and Food increased the research budget for the Benaki Phytopathological Institute to 242,500 euros to address deformation problems that have persisted since 2021. However, agricultural associations in Imathia have expressed frustration over the lack of scientific answers and noted that local research bodies remain understaffed and poorly equipped.

In the Larissa regional unit, including areas such as Tyrnavos and Tempi, the situation has escalated. Inspections by regional officials and the University of Thessaly indicate that crop losses in some holdings are approaching 100% of marketable production. The deformation, which was initially seen in specific varieties, has spread to others previously thought to be resistant. Additionally, the appearance of dry shoots is threatening long-term tree survival. While preliminary findings suggest the presence of the Fusicoccum fungus, investigations into other contributing factors are ongoing.
