IMAX achieves record summer box office with $728 million
IMAX Corporation has achieved its highest-grossing summer to date, reporting $728 million in worldwide receipts from Memorial Day through Labor Day. This represents a 73% increase over the previous record set in 2023.
The growth was largely driven by Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey,” which has become the highest-grossing IMAX release of all time, earning $485 million. The film accounts for 30% of its total worldwide box office. Due to high demand, IMAX has extended the film’s run through September 30 in 39 locations capable of 70mm film projection.
Technological aspects of the IMAX format, such as specialized screen aspect ratios and acoustics, continue to drive interest in premium large-format cinema. While digital and laser projections are common, only 41 cinemas globally can support the 1.43:1 aspect ratio required for 70mm film exhibitions.
