Commercial success and industry reactions to The Odyssey

Overview

Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ has reached a new global gross of approximately $1.6 billion. The film has become the 17th movie in history to surpass $1 billion in international revenue and marks the first Hollywood production that is neither a sequel nor a remake to achieve this milestone since ‘Avatar’ in 2009. As the first feature-length film shot entirely on IMAX cameras, it has surpassed the IMAX earnings of ‘Avatar’ and remains the highest-grossing R-rated film and the highest-grossing IMAX release ever.

Due to sustained demand, IMAX 70mm screenings have been extended through late September 2026 in several countries, including the US, UK, and Canada. The film’s success has significantly boosted IMAX’s market position, providing the company with increased leverage in negotiations with international theater chains. This success has also influenced other major franchises and upcoming releases; Lucasfilm announced 70mm IMAX releases for the original ‘Star Wars’ and ‘Star Wars: Starfighter’ in 2027, while ‘Dune: Part Three’ is also slated for IMAX 70mm theaters.

Amid the film’s commercial triumphs, actor Elliot Page, who plays Sinon, has expressed difficulty in securing subsequent work, noting on the ‘On Film… With Kevin McCarthy’ podcast, “My phone isn’t ringing. I don’t have any new offers.”

Industry reactions remain mixed. While praising the work, filmmaker Paul Schrader warned at the Venice Film Festival that the film’s performance is a rare exception and cautioned that studios attempting to replicate this high-budget success through sequels could face significant financial losses. Following this achievement, Nolan is expected to take an extended break, with his next project potentially not arriving until 2029.
