IMF and Venezuela discuss technical assistance and restart of Article IV consultation

The International Monetary Fund met with a Venezuelan delegation in Washington on May 30, a session later detailed by the IMF on June 4. IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva and staff met with Vice‑President for Economic Affairs Calixto Ortega Sánchez and Central Bank of Venezuela President Luis Pérez.

The talks focused on immediate capacity‑development support, including fiscal management, strengthening the monetary framework and improving macroeconomic statistics, and outlined a path toward resuming the IMF’s Article IV consultation that reviews member‑state economies. The IMF confirmed it is not yet involved in Venezuela’s sovereign‑debt restructuring discussions.

Both sides agreed to deepen technical cooperation and continue coordination on short‑term assistance programmes as Venezuela works to present an economic framework and debt‑sustainability assessment in June.
