Turkish Cypriot leaders demand sovereign equality and property rights
Turkish Cypriot President Tufan Erhürman has raised concerns regarding the Cyprus dispute, specifically criticizing efforts to obstruct or complicate applications to the Immovable Property Commission. Erhürman noted that while the Commission is recognized by the European Court of Human Rights as an effective legal remedy, Greek Cypriot leadership appears to be hindering its use. He emphasized that a comprehensive solution to the property issue is only possible through a broader settlement of the Cyprus problem.
Erhürman also addressed the necessity of confidence-building measures, arguing that attempts to maintain the isolation of Turkish Cypriots and deny them equal status undermine peace efforts. He stated that true resolution requires recognizing the equality and rights of both communities rather than merely stating a desire for a solution.
In a separate statement, Hulusi Akar, Chairman of the Turkish Grand National Assembly National Defense Commission, asserted that any solution in Cyprus must be based on the principle of two sovereign, equal states with international equal status. Akar criticized the Greek Cypriot administration for failing to recognize Turkish Cypriots as equals and stated that Turkey will not compromise on the rights and security of the Turkish Cypriot community.
