Cyprus dispute and Turkish Cypriot status demands

Overview

Turkish Cypriot leadership has emphasized that status inequality is the primary obstacle to resolving the Cyprus dispute. Tahsin Ertuğruloğlu argued that negotiations remain ineffective because the Greek Cypriot administration is treated as a state while the Turkish Cypriot side is relegated to the status of a community. He further criticized the United Nations Security Council and the European Union for stances that he claims perpetuate the issue.

Building on these demands for equality, President Tufan Erhürman highlighted concerns regarding property rights, specifically alleging that the Greek Cypriot leadership is hindering applications to the Immovable Property Commission. Erhürman stated that a comprehensive solution requires recognizing the rights of both communities and ending the political isolation of Turkish Cypriots.

Supporting this position, Hulusi Akar of the Turkish Grand National Assembly National Defense Commission asserted that any settlement must be based on the principle of “two sovereign, equal states with international equal status,” maintaining that Turkey will not compromise on the security and rights of the Turkish Cypriot community.
