IMO: 400 ships and 6,000 sailors stranded in Persian Gulf
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) reports that approximately 400 ships and 6,000 sailors remain stranded in the Persian Gulf due to ongoing conflict in the Middle East. IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez stated that while some crews have managed to leave, many have been unable to depart safely since the conflict began six months ago.
Since the start of the hostilities on February 28, the IMO has verified at least 70 attacks on international vessels, resulting in the deaths of 19 sailors. The instability in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for one-fifth of global oil trade, is causing severe disruptions to the supply chains of fuel and fertilizer, impacting the global economy.
In the context of the conflict between the United States and Iran, US Central Command (Centcom) reports that the US military has diverted 82 merchant ships, disabled three, and boarded two vessels as part of a maritime blockade. While US President Donald Trump has claimed the Strait of Hormuz is fully open and controlled by the US, diplomatic efforts to reach a final agreement remain stalled due to disagreements over security guarantees and freedom of navigation.
