Strait of Hormuz maritime security crisis
Overview
Since hostilities began on February 28, a maritime crisis in the Strait of Hormuz has targeted commercial vessels, resulting in at least 70 verified attacks on international shipping. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) reports that 19 sailors have died in these incidents, including crew members from the bulk carrier Riyan Star and the Minoan Dignity.
The instability has caused significant disruptions to global supply chains for essential goods like fuel and fertilizer. Approximately 400 ships and 6,000 sailors remain stranded in the Persian Gulf. Economic impacts include rising freight rates, increased insurance premiums, and a decrease in vessel transits, with many ships operating without Automatic Identification System (AIS) functionality to mitigate risk.
In response to the conflict, US Central Command (Centcom) reports that the US military has diverted 82 merchant ships, disabled three, and boarded two vessels as part of a maritime blockade. While US President Donald Trump has claimed the Strait of Hormuz is fully open and controlled by the US, diplomatic efforts to reach a final agreement between the United States and Iran remain stalled. IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez described the situation as “unresolved,” noting that disagreements over security guarantees and freedom of navigation continue to impede a resolution.
