IMO calls for cooperation to restore navigation in Strait of Hormuz

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has issued an urgent call for international cooperation to restore freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. Marking six months of conflict in the Middle East, the organization highlighted the severe disruption to global supply chains for essential commodities such as fuels and fertilizers.

To date, the IMO has verified at least 70 attacks on international shipping, resulting in the deaths of 19 seafarers. Approximately 400 ships, carrying roughly 6,000 seafarers, remain unable to depart the region safely due to heightened risks.

IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez emphasized that resolving the crisis requires renewed political will and unified action from Member States, the shipping industry, and the United Nations system to ensure the right of transit passage through international shipping lanes.
