Imo State: Gunmen abduct NYSC members from two buses

On October 1, 2026, suspected gunmen attacked two commercial buses along the Owerri-Onitsha Expressway near Umunoha in Imo State. The vehicles were transporting passengers, including several National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members, from Ibadan to orientation camps in Akwa Ibom and Abia States.

Security forces, including the Nigerian Army's 34 Artillery Brigade under Operation UDO KA, the Nigerian Navy, Air Force, Police, and DSS, conducted a coordinated rescue operation. They successfully rescued 10 victims, including eight prospective corps members, and recovered both buses.

Reports indicate that approximately 20 corps members were among those abducted, though authorities are still verifying the total number of victims. Abductors have reportedly demanded a ransom of ₦950 million, with some sources stating a demand of ₦50 million per individual. Joint search-and-rescue operations continue to locate the remaining captives and apprehend the suspects.
