NYSC member abductions in Imo State

Overview

On October 1, 2026, gunmen attacked two commercial buses on the Owerri-Onitsha Expressway near Umunoha in Imo State, abducting approximately 20 passengers. Among the victims were prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members traveling from Ibadan to orientation camps in Akwa Ibom and Abia States.

A joint operation involving the Nigerian Army, Police, Navy, and Air Force rescued 10 victims, including eight prospective corps members. However, the remaining captives remain in captivity. While security agencies used drones to locate the abductors' camp, rescue efforts have been delayed due to reports that the site is mined with improvised explosive devices (IEDs). Authorities are preparing to deploy heavy equipment, such as bulldozers and armored personnel carriers, to facilitate safe entry.

Kidnappers initially demanded a ransom of ₦50 million per victim, with total demands estimated between ₦950 million and ₦1 billion. Recent reports indicate the demand may have been reduced to ₦5 million per person. Amidst the ongoing standoff, families of the victims have reported that the captives are being subjected to physical torture.

By October 3, Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu deployed Deputy Inspector-General Shehu Umar Nadada to Imo State to lead intensified search-and-rescue missions. The abduction has drawn significant public concern; Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) confirmed that at least three of its graduates are among the abducted, and political figure Peter Obi has called for their immediate rescue, stating that such insecurity must not become a normalized part of Nigerian life.

As of October 4, Imo State Commissioner of Police Audu Bosso confirmed that while drones have successfully pinpointed the camp's coordinates, the threat of IEDs continues to stall immediate extraction efforts.
