New Delhi police detain thousands during Cockroach Janta Party protests

Authorities in New Delhi launched a major security crackdown to prevent protests organized by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), a youth-led movement. The demonstrations aimed to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar following a controversial voter list revision. Critics and opposition groups allege the revision disproportionately benefits the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and has resulted in the removal of approximately 130 million names from voter rolls.

During the crackdown, police detained between 2,000 and 2,500 protesters, including CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke, along with several opposition lawmakers and activists. Security measures included the suspension of metro services, the closure of markets, and the deployment of thousands of police and paramilitary personnel. While many detainees were later released, the Supreme Court has characterized some of the detentions as “illegal.”

The Election Commission and the BJP have denied all allegations of political manipulation or wrongdoing regarding the voter list updates.
