Imran Khan faces scrutiny over prison health and treatment

Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan is facing increasing scrutiny regarding his treatment and health while held at Adiala prison in Rawalpindi. Khan has been in custody since August 2023 and is currently serving a 14-year sentence in a corruption case.

Khan’s sons, Kasim and Sulaiman Khan, have alleged that their father is being “slowly killed” due to cruel treatment driven by a “personal grudge” held by Pakistan’s army chief, Asim Munir. They reported that Khan is confined to a small cell without human contact, denied access to new books, and restricted from seeing family or neutral medical professionals. The family also raised concerns regarding a neglected eye condition that may have resulted in near-blindness in one eye.

International cricket figures, including Michael Holding, have joined calls for Khan to receive humane treatment. Holding expressed support for international captains who petitioned Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to ensure basic amenities for the former leader. In February 2026, Pakistan’s Supreme Court ordered the establishment of a medical board to examine Khan’s vision and directed that he be allowed contact with his children.
