Imran Khan’s three‑year imprisonment triggers nationwide protests
Former prime minister Imran Khan has been held in Adiala jail for three years since his arrest on 5 August 2023, serving a 14‑year corruption sentence and an additional 17‑year term alongside his wife Bushra Bibi in a case involving state gifts. PTI organised country‑wide demonstrations on the anniversary, with protests in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Sindh and Balochistan. Police actions resulted in more than 100 arrests, baton‑charges, tear‑gas use and alleged assaults on journalists.
Amnesty International says Khan has been denied family visits for over eight months, has limited access to lawyers and his health, including vision, has deteriorated. The Adiala Jail administration disputes the solitary‑confinement claim, stating he receives standard inmate facilities, daily medical checks and weekly meetings with his wife.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Suhail Afridi announced a march on 27 September if legal cases against Khan and his wife are not heard on merit and prison‑visit restrictions are not lifted. Former U.S. special envoy Zalmay Khalilzad called for a political reset in Pakistan, citing an unsustainable economic crisis and worsening security.
