IMSS and INEA launch rural community literacy program

The Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) and the National Institute for Adult Education (INEA) have launched a Community Literacy Program to reduce educational gaps in rural areas. The initiative utilizes approximately 789 medical and nursing interns performing social service to assist in literacy efforts, primarily targeting older adults.

Following a collaboration agreement signed in May 2024, the program commenced on May 11, 2026, in the priority states of Chiapas, Oaxaca, Michoacán, and Puebla. Medical staff identify individuals who cannot read or write during routine healthcare visits and invite them to join study circles. These in-person sessions are held twice weekly for approximately 90 minutes, with schedules adjusted to meet community needs and medical unit hours.
