IMSS social and cultural outreach initiatives

Overview

The Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) is implementing various social and community outreach initiatives.

In rural regions including Chiapas, Michoacán, Oaxaca, and Puebla, IMSS has partnered with the National Institute for Adult Education (INEA) to launch a Community Literacy Program. Following a collaboration agreement signed in May 2024, the program officially commenced on May 11, 2026. The initiative utilizes approximately 789 medical and nursing interns performing social service to identify and assist older adults with literacy needs during routine healthcare visits.

To reduce educational gaps, medical staff invite identified individuals to join study circles. These in-person sessions are held twice weekly for approximately 90 minutes, with schedules adjusted to accommodate community needs and medical unit hours.

Simultaneously, the institute is expanding its cultural programming. This includes the ‘Escenarios IMSS-Cultura’ program in Veracruz Sur and a collaboration with the National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature (INBAL) to present the play ‘El eterno femenino’ by Rosario Castellanos in Mexico City.
