IMSS completes complex facial reconstruction for young patient in Monterrey

A multidisciplinary team at the Hospital de Traumatología y Ortopedia, Clínica 21 of Mexico's Social Security Institute (IMSS) in Nuevo León performed a three‑stage facial reconstruction on 29‑year‑old Ángel Abraham. Born with a developmental disorder that impaired growth of the mid‑facial bones and caused an overgrowth of the lower jaw, he underwent cranial bone cuts to advance the middle third of the face, mandibular repositioning, and a nose reconstruction using a cartilage graft taken from his own rib.

The surgeries prioritized restoring a functional airway and chewing ability. According to the IMSS statement, the procedures, guided by CT scans, 3‑D‑printed models and detailed clinical studies, significantly improved Ángel Abraham's breathing, dental alignment and overall quality of life.
