IMSS hospitals in Guanajuato and Guerrero record historic multi‑organ donations

The Regional General Hospital No. 58 (HGR 58) of the IMSS in León, Guanajuato, performed its first heart procurement on 21 July 2026. The heart was flown by helicopter to the National Institute of Cardiology in Mexico City to treat a critically ill patient, while a liver, two kidneys and two corneas were also recovered for transplant. The donor, 22‑year‑old Victor, died from a gunshot wound to the head and his family consented to donation, allowing six recipients to receive organs.

In Acapulco, the Regional General Hospital No. 1 “Vicente Guerrero” completed its fourth multi‑organ procurement of the year, also involving a 22‑year‑old donor who succumbed to a traffic‑related brain injury. The operation supplied a liver, kidneys and corneas, benefitting 25 patients on the national waiting list. The organs were transferred to the National Transplant Center and the Eye Bank for immediate transplantation. Both events highlight the IMSS’s coordinated organ‑donation network and its impact on patients across Mexico.
