Mexico expands health services amid funding disputes
Entities: Hospital de Especialidades IMSS Bienestar de Tepic · Hospital General de Zona No. 29 “Dr. Belisario Domínguez” · Hospital Infantil de México “Federico Gómez” · Dr. Elsa Pimentel Arce · Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS)
Overview
Since July 2026 Mexico’s federal and state health modernization has continued to broaden services despite ongoing funding disputes and logistical hurdles. In Baja California the Red Código Infarto network and a free hemodynamics suite at Hospital General de Mexicali rescued 1,171 lives, lowered heart‑disease mortality from 83.7 to 69.4 per 100,000 and treated 106 patients with 32 coronary procedures and 23 angioplasties. Mobile health caravans in Mexicali, San Quintín and Tijuana provided free medical, dental, laboratory, imaging, vaccination and education services, while the IMSS offered community courses on arts, sports, nutrition and digital skills. An El Niño‑driven heat wave prompted a public‑health alert and an expanded “Verano Seguro” program with additional hydration stations and oral rehydration solutions for vulnerable groups.
In Zacatecas, Governor David Monreal Ávila chaired a health‑board meeting reviewing the IMSS‑Bienestar transition and announced President Claudia Sheinbaum’s plan to install 500 new clinics, upgrade community hospitals, curb drug shortages and boost medical staffing. Meanwhile, Baja California Sur responded to a fire in San José de Comondú through coordinated COEPRIS and SAMU actions that delivered pre‑hospital care, chlorinated water, food‑disinfection supplies and disease‑surveillance to avert outbreaks.
Organ‑donation activity remains historic, and challenges such as the lack of a site for a new hospital in Chihuahua and recent simulation‑capacity upgrades at Hospital General de Zona No. 46 in Tabasco persist as the system expands.
