Ciudad Juárez suffers severe flooding and hospital inundation

Severe storms and heavy hail caused widespread flooding and infrastructure damage in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, on October 23 and 24, 2026. The intense rainfall led to the overflow of the La Montada dike and caused historical runoff in the Colorado and Las Víboras arroyos.

The flooding significantly impacted the IMSS Hospital General de Zona No. 6, where water and hail entered the basement, emergency area, X-ray department, laboratories, and hallways. While 178 patients remained under medical care without needing evacuation, one operating room was temporarily closed for safety. The IMSS attributed the incident to hail obstructing roof drains and urban drainage systems being overwhelmed.

In the city, at least ten vehicles were swept away by currents in the Arroyo de las Víboras, and one family of nine was rescued after being trapped in their vehicle. Local authorities reported 107 total incidents, including rescues, fallen trees, and power outages. Additionally, the Marelli Automotive Lighting plant suspended operations due to facility damage. To mitigate further risks, the JMAS is operating the Pico del Águila, Puerto La Paz, and Filtro II dams to regulate water flow.
