Weather alerts and storm impacts in Ciudad Juárez
Overview
Following a period of extreme heat in early September, Ciudad Juárez transitioned into a series of severe weather contingencies. After a preventive alert in mid-September, the city faced significant impacts from heavy rainfall and hail. By late September, precipitation levels reached 130 millimeters, causing street flooding, landslides, and fatalities, including a man who died in a catchment basin in Villa Bonita and a mother and daughter trapped by a roof collapse in Senderos del Sol.
On October 23 and 24, 2026, the region was hit by severe storms and heavy hail, causing widespread flooding. The overflow of the La Montada dike and the Arroyo de las Víboras swept away at least ten vehicles, including three carried into the Río Bravo. Emergency services rescued a family of nine trapped in a vehicle during these events. Infrastructure damage was notably severe at the IMSS Hospital General de Zona No. 6, and the Marelli Automotive Lighting plant suspended operations.
By late October, the economic impact became clearer as residents reported high repair costs for water-damaged homes and vehicles, with mechanical repairs for flooded cars ranging from 5,700 to 12,000 pesos. In a separate rescue near the Arroyo de las Víboras, a local driver assisted in saving a family of ten from rising floodwaters.
The Municipal Water and Sanitation Board (JMAS) has activated a permanent operation involving 30 crews and specialized machinery to mitigate damage and address sewage overflows caused by debris and rainfall. To address long-term vulnerabilities, the Chihuahua State Government is coordinating with municipal authorities to assess property damage through the State Fund for Natural Disasters. Officials are also exploring large-scale infrastructure, including a potential 160 million peso dam project at Arroyo de Las Víboras and hydraulic works in collaboration with the North American Development Bank (NADBank).
