IMSS implements solar energy solutions for healthcare in Mexico

The Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) is implementing solar energy solutions to improve healthcare infrastructure and efficiency across different regions.

In Hidalgo, IMSS Bienestar has received five solar-powered refrigerators donated by UNICEF and guaranteed by the Pan American Health Organization. These units are being deployed in the Valle del Mezquital, Huasteca, Altiplano, and Otomí-Tepehua regions to strengthen the Universal Vaccination Program. The equipment allows health units to maintain vaccines at a constant temperature between 2 and 8 degrees Celsius, protecting the cold chain even during electrical supply interruptions.

In Tijuana, Baja California, IMSS has installed a photovoltaic system consisting of 86 solar panels at the Breast Cancer Detection and Diagnosis Unit (UDDCM). This project, a collaboration with Fundación Sempra Infraestructura, is expected to provide approximately half of the unit's energy requirements and mitigate roughly 36 tons of carbon dioxide annually. The savings generated from this installation will be redirected toward medical equipment, staff training, and infrastructure improvements.
