IMSS in Campeche probes alleged data leak after family receives funeral call for living patient

A family in Campeche reported that a funeral home called them claiming their relative, who was still hospitalized in a critical condition at the General Hospital’s emergency department, had died. The caller said he obtained the family's phone number from the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) and offered funeral services. The family filed a complaint, stating that the misinformation caused a nervous breakdown for a relative. IMSS in Campeche denied any contracts with funeral homes or the sharing of patient data with third parties. The institute confirmed receipt of a written request and said its relevant areas will investigate whether any personal data were improperly disclosed and determine any responsibilities.

The family plans to pursue a formal legal complaint to hold any responsible parties accountable.
