Mexico IMSS social security & funeral concerns

Overview

In early July 2026, the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) warned that fraudulent advertisements on social media were promoting low-cost registrations through third-party intermediaries. On 24 July, a family in Campeche reported that a funeral home contacted them claiming a relative hospitalized at the General Hospital had died, asserting they obtained the family’s phone number from IMSS. The incident, which caused a relative to suffer a nervous breakdown, sparked concerns over improper disclosure of patient data. IMSS in Campeche denied any contracts with funeral homes or unauthorized data sharing, stating that relevant areas will investigate the alleged leak to determine responsibility. The family intends to file a formal legal complaint.
