IMSS lacks viable land for new hospital in Chihuahua

Senator Mario Humberto Vázquez Robles (PAN) warned that the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) must fulfill its legal duty to provide sufficient infrastructure for the roughly 2.8 million beneficiaries in Chihuahua, citing a 55 % cut in federal investment for physical assets and a surge in complaints to the National Human Rights Commission. He urged the federal government to fund and build a new hospital, noting that state and municipal authorities have offered land but the institute has not acted.

The IMSS responded that, to date, no legally donated site meets the required criteria. It dismissed the previously offered La Concordia plot due to a legal conflict, flagged a 20‑hectare state‑offered site for safety concerns because of a nearby LPG station, and reported geological instability at the location. A third privately offered parcel also faces ejido‑owner disputes. Consequently, the institute stated that no viable land is currently available for the hospital project in Chihuahua.

Both sides stress the need for concrete action to address the region’s growing demand for medical services.
