IMSS launches 553‑bed megahospital in Santa Catarina, Nuevo León

The Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) is constructing a new Hospital General Regional in Santa Catarina, Nuevo León, that will become the largest IMSS facility in the state. Built by the Secretaría de la Defensa Nacional with military engineers, the complex will contain 553 beds – 260 censable and 293 non‑censable – along with 40 emergency beds, 20 intensive‑care beds, eight operating rooms, a chemotherapy suite, hemodialysis units, a tomographer and a magnetic‑resonance scanner. The hospital will offer 39 medical and surgical specialties and is expected to serve roughly 299,400 IMSS beneficiaries in the region, covering an estimated 2.5 million people.

The project is part of IMSS’s broader plan to construct 47 hospitals by 2030, replacing an earlier public‑private partnership model cancelled in 2019. A similar military‑built hospital is under way in Saltillo, Coahuila, with 558 beds.
