IMSS offers voluntary affiliation options for self-employed workers
The Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) offers two primary voluntary affiliation schemes for self-employed individuals, freelancers, and those without formal employment: Modality 10 and Modality 33.
Modality 33, known as the Family Health Insurance, provides medical, surgical, pharmaceutical, and maternity care. It is paid annually, with costs ranging from 8,900 pesos for those up to 19 years old to 21,300 pesos for those over 80. This modality has specific exclusions, such as pre-existing conditions, aesthetic surgeries, and certain chronic illnesses. Each family member must be enrolled and pay an individual fee.
Modality 10 is designed for independent workers, such as artisans and small merchants. In addition to medical services, it includes coverage for disability, life insurance, retirement savings, and Infonavit contributions. It also allows for the registration of beneficiaries, including spouses, children, and parents. Payments can be made monthly, bimonthly, semiannually, or annually, with the amount calculated based on registered salary and economic activity.
