IMSS organ procurement in Mexico provides liver and kidneys to patients

The Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) coordinated two recent multiorgan procurements. In the first case, a 29‑year‑old donor’s liver was transplanted to a pediatric patient with fulminant hepatic failure at the Hospital Infantil de México “Federico Gómez”, while the donor’s kidneys were allocated to the Unidad Médica de Alta Especialidad at the Hospital General del Centro Médico Nacional La Raza. The procedure, carried out at Hospital General de Zona No. 29 “Dr. Belisario Domínguez”, marked the facility’s first multiorgan procurement of the year.

A second case involved a 35‑year‑old from La Peñita de Jaltemba, Nayarit. After brain death was confirmed, his family authorized donation, allowing IMSS specialists at the Hospital de Especialidades IMSS Bienestar de Tepic to retrieve two kidneys and musculoskeletal tissue. The kidneys were sent to Sonora for transplantation, and the tissue will support reconstructive surgeries. This was the hospital’s second organ donation within fifteen days, underscoring the growing culture of donation in Mexico.
