IMSS performs successful liver transplant in Mexico City
A 47-year-old patient, Lupita, successfully underwent a liver transplant at the Hospital de Especialidades del Centro Médico Nacional (CMN) Siglo XXI, part of the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS) in Mexico.
Diagnosed with primary biliary cholangitis in 2018, the patient's condition progressed to liver cirrhosis, causing significant physical deterioration and loss of mobility. The transplant procedure, performed on July 1, lasted approximately seven hours. Dr. Francisco Flores Gama, a surgeon from the transplant unit, noted the complexity of the surgery due to constant bleeding and the fact that no other permanent therapy exists to replace liver function.
Following the successful operation, the patient remained hospitalized for about 17 days, including time in the intensive care unit. Three months post-surgery, she is recovering favorably and has resumed daily activities.
