IMSS specialists in Saltillo complete two organ procurements in one day
Specialists at the Hospital General de Zona Número Dos of the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS) in Saltillo, Coahuila, successfully performed two multiorgan procurements in a single day. These donations are expected to benefit approximately 80 people currently awaiting organs or tissues.
The first donor, a 54-year-old man diagnosed with brain death following an ischemic stroke, provided corneas, kidneys, bones, tendons, muscle, and skin. The corneas were sent to the Centro Médico Nacional La Raza, the kidneys to the Unidad Médica de Alta Especialidad in Torreón, and the remaining tissues to the Instituto Mexicano de Biotecnología.
A second potential donor, a 44-year-old patient with renal disease, also provided corneas following a cardiac arrest. Medical officials noted that the decision of the families to honor the deceased's wishes provides a significant opportunity to improve the quality of life for many recipients.
