Incheon expands infrastructure plans for airport and logistics
Incheon officials and lawmakers are pushing for significant infrastructure expansions to bolster regional competitiveness. Representative Jung Il-young has called for the inclusion of the fifth-stage Incheon International Airport expansion project in the 7th Airport Development Comprehensive Plan. This 6 trillion won project aims to increase annual passenger capacity to 131 million and flight operations to 830,000. Jung emphasized the need for proactive planning, noting that delays in expansion could lead to congestion, citing past instances where actual passenger numbers significantly exceeded forecasts.
Additionally, Incheon City is proposing the construction of the ‘East-West Peace Logistics Expressway.’ This 249km route would connect Incheon International Airport through Ganghwa, Gyeonggi, and Gangwon provinces to Goseong. The project aims to link the West Sea to the East Sea, creating a logistics and tourism axis to stimulate growth in border regions.
In support of local maritime commerce, Incheon City and the Incheon Port Authority are offering incentives totaling 130 million won to local freight forwarders to mitigate rising maritime freight costs and encourage the use of Incheon Port.
