Incheon infrastructure and tourism development
Overview
Incheon is pursuing various initiatives to strengthen its position as a major regional hub for tourism and logistics. The city is working to establish Incheon Port as a Northeast Asian cruise hub, supported by expanded ‘Fly & Cruise’ operations linking the port to Incheon International Airport. To accommodate growing cruise arrivals, the city has implemented enhanced transportation services, including shuttle buses and specialized guides.
In tandem with maritime tourism, efforts are underway to expand aviation and land logistics. Representative Jung Il-young has called for the inclusion of the fifth-stage Incheon International Airport expansion project in the 7th Airport Development Comprehensive Plan. This 6 trillion won project aims to increase annual passenger capacity to 131 million and flight operations to 830,000. Jung emphasized the need for proactive planning, noting that delays could lead to congestion as passenger numbers have previously exceeded forecasts.
Additionally, the city is advocating for the ‘East-West Peace Logistics Expressway,’ a planned 249km route intended to connect the West Sea to the East Sea by running from Incheon International Airport through Ganghwa, Gyeonggi, and Gangwon provinces to Goseong. This project aims to create a logistics and tourism axis to stimulate growth in border regions.
To support local maritime commerce, Incheon City and the Incheon Port Authority are offering incentives totaling 130 million won to local freight forwarders to mitigate rising maritime freight costs and encourage the use of Incheon Port.
