Income Tax Department to launch Project Insight 2.0 for faster refunds

The Income Tax Department is preparing to implement ‘Project Insight 2.0’, a major technical upgrade designed to accelerate income tax return (ITR) processing and minimize refund delays. Utilizing artificial intelligence, machine learning, and advanced data analytics, the new system aims to automate the verification process by cross-referencing taxpayer claims with data from the Annual Information Statement (AIS), Taxpayer Information Summary (TIS), and Form 26AS.

Under this new framework, if no discrepancies are found, the system is expected to approve refunds with zero manual intervention, potentially reducing processing times from weeks to just a few days. This automation is intended to provide more transparent checks and immediate alerts to taxpayers regarding any mismatches in TDS claims or tax calculations.

In conjunction with these technological advancements, taxpayers are cautioned regarding reporting requirements for capital gains. Failure to report gains from mutual fund redemptions in an ITR can lead to notices from the department, as transaction details are tracked via AIS and TIS. Taxpayers are advised to verify any notices through the official portal and use the feedback feature if transaction data in the AIS appears incorrect.
