India Income Tax Department technological upgrades

The Indian Income Tax Department is implementing technology-driven initiatives to increase transparency and efficiency. The department utilizes a faceless assessment system that employs data analytics, artificial intelligence, and risk assessment tools to minimize direct interaction between taxpayers and authorities. Under Section 144B of the Income-tax Act, taxpayers manage notices and documentation through electronic e-filing accounts.

Building on these technological advancements, the department is preparing to launch ‘Project Insight 2.0’. This upgrade aims to accelerate income tax return processing and minimize refund delays by using machine learning and advanced data analytics to automate verification. By cross-referencing taxpayer claims with data from the Annual Information Statement (AIS), Taxpayer Information Summary (TIS), and Form 26AS, the system intends to approve refunds with zero manual intervention when no discrepancies are found.

While these systems increase automation, taxpayers are cautioned regarding reporting requirements. For instance, failure to report capital gains from mutual fund redemptions can trigger notices, as transaction details are tracked via the AIS and TIS.
