Brazilian Cities Rank Safest in Atlas da Violência 2026

The Atlas da Violência 2026, released by Ipea and the Fórum Brasileiro de Segurança Pública, identified Indaiatuba as the safest Brazilian municipality with more than 200,000 residents, posting a homicide rate of 5.6 per 100,000 inhabitants. Mayor Custódio Tavares credited investments in technology, integrated policing and preventive actions for the result.

In the broader national ranking, Novo Horizonte secured the 27th position with only one homicide in 2024, a rate of 2.5 per 100,000. Birigui and Fernandópolis followed closely, ranked 114th and 115th respectively, each with a homicide rate of 4.1 per 100,000. The study shows Brazil’s total homicides fell to 42,590 in 2024, a 7.4% drop from the previous year, bringing the national homicide rate to 20.1 per 100,000—the lowest level in eleven years. São Paulo state led the country with the lowest state-wide rate at 6.6 per 100,000. However, the report warns that municipalities with 100,000–500,000 inhabitants now show the highest average homicide rates, surpassing both larger metros and smaller towns.
