INDAP celebrates 10 years of Peasant Markets in Chile
The Institute of Agricultural Development (INDAP) celebrated the 10th anniversary of its 'Mercados Campesinos' (Peasant Markets) initiative. Launched on September 3, 2016, in Colina, the program began with 20 local producers selling goods like vegetables, eggs, and honey directly to consumers to bypass intermediaries.
Since its inception, the network has expanded to 220 permanent and seasonal sales points across all 16 regions of Chile. The program currently involves 3,012 farmers, including 2,454 women, 710 members of indigenous peoples, and 211 young people under the age of 40. The regions with the highest concentration of markets are Valparaíso and La Araucanía, each with 29 locations.
During the commemoration in Las Condes, Agriculture Minister Jaime Campos highlighted the importance of these spaces for the direct commercialization of family farming products. Moving forward, INDAP aims to strengthen commercial management, improve the shopping experience, and increase urban positioning to ensure long-term sustainability.
