Chilean INDAP Mercados Campesinos program anniversary
Overview
The Instituto de Desarrollo Agropecuario (INDAP) marked the 10th anniversary of its ‘Mercados Campesinos’ (Peasant Markets) program, which was launched in September 2016 in Colina. The initiative was created to enable small-scale farmers to sell products directly to consumers, thereby bypassing intermediaries.
Since its inception, the program has grown into a network of 220 permanent and seasonal sales points spanning all 16 regions of Chile. The markets currently support 3,012 farmers, a demographic that includes 2,454 women, 710 members of indigenous peoples, and 211 individuals under the age of 40. The highest concentrations of these markets are located in the Valparaíso and La Araucanía regions.
During the anniversary commemorations in Las Condes, Agriculture Minister Jaime Campos emphasized the role of these spaces in the direct commercialization of family farming products. INDAP has stated its future goals include strengthening commercial management, enhancing the shopping experience, and increasing urban positioning to support long-term sustainability.
