India advances clean energy through grid reliability and hydrogen innovation
India is seeing a structural shift in its energy landscape, moving from a focus on low-cost renewable generation to prioritizing the reliability and dispatchability of clean energy. Ratul Puri, Chairman of Hindustan Power, noted that as renewable capacity grows, the emphasis must shift toward how effectively that capacity can meet rising electricity demand through improved storage, transmission, and system economics.
In a related development for sustainable energy, researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology-Guwahati have developed a low-cost catalyst for producing hydrogen from water. By combining an inexpensive nickel salt with an anthracene-based organic molecule, the team created a coordination polymer-based catalyst. This innovation aims to support the National Green Hydrogen Mission by providing a more affordable alternative to current catalysts made from rare and expensive noble metals, facilitating the transition from fossil-fuel-based hydrogen to cleaner electrolysis methods.
