Overview
India is advancing its National Green Hydrogen Mission through both industrial capacity allocation and technological innovation. The government has awarded 30 kilotonnes per annum (KTPA) of green hydrogen production capacity to four refineries—Indian Oil Corporation, Numaligarh Refineries, Bharat Petroleum Corporation, and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation—under a build-own-operate arrangement.
Complementing these industrial developments, research efforts are focusing on cost reduction and grid stability. Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology-Guwahati have developed a low-cost catalyst using nickel salt and an anthracene-based organic molecule to produce hydrogen from water, aiming to provide an alternative to expensive noble metal catalysts. Concurrently, industry leaders have noted a structural shift in the energy landscape, emphasizing the need for improved storage and transmission to ensure the reliability of clean energy as renewable capacity grows.
