India aims for 100 fabless semiconductor firms under Semicon 2.0

The Indian government, through the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), has set a target of nurturing 100 fabless semiconductor companies under the new Semicon 2.0 programme. Additional Secretary Amitesh Kumar Sinha of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology said the goal is achievable, noting that 24 firms have already received approval and that future approvals will depend on the quality of proposals.

Semicon 2.0 builds on the earlier Semicon 1.0 framework, offering financial assistance, electronic design automation tools, infrastructure, intellectual‑property support and facilitation of chip tape‑outs. ICEA chairman Pankaj Mohindroo said the revamped scheme removes previous funding caps, allowing support of up to Rs 1,000 crore per project, and aims eventually to create 500 semiconductor design companies in India.
