India Aims for 2,000 GW Power Boost, Pushes Floating Solar Projects

Adani Green Energy executive Sagar Adani said India will need nearly 2,000 GW of additional power generation capacity over the next two decades to support industrial growth, electric‑vehicle adoption, digital infrastructure and AI‑driven services. He stressed that meeting this demand will require large‑scale renewable development, grid modernisation and extensive energy‑storage solutions.

Because flat, grid‑connected land for utility‑scale solar is increasingly scarce, developers are turning to floating solar installations on reservoirs, irrigation tanks and hydropower dams. Floating solar can use existing water‑body surfaces and grid connections, avoid land‑acquisition disputes, and improve panel efficiency by 5‑15 % through evaporative cooling. The approach is gaining traction in states such as Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and Maharashtra, and is viewed as a key way to help India meet its 500 GW non‑fossil‑fuel target while preserving water resources.
