India renewables: capacity milestones and supply bottlenecks
Overview
India’s renewable energy expansion accelerated through mid-2026, with total installed capacity reaching 552 GW, of which non-fossil fuel sources account for over 54 percent (300.50 GW). Solar has become the dominant renewable source, reaching approximately 164.59 GW. In 2025, India was the world’s second-largest solar growth market, adding over 37 GW. The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana scheme has driven significant rooftop adoption, with over 51 lakh households installing systems, many reporting zero electricity bills.
Regulatory and technical developments continue to shape the sector. The MNRE issued guidance exempting projects bid before August 31, 2025, from certain ALMM List-II cell mandates, and proposed a 14-digit alphanumeric naming system for cell models to improve traceability. To prevent installation delays, the MNRE also authorized a 10 percent tolerance for DC capacity in rooftop solar systems. SECI has further supported this via new tenders for grid-connected rooftop solar across several states.
However, rapid growth has exposed infrastructure and institutional bottlenecks. The Appellate Tribunal for Electricity (APTEL) faces over 1,500 pending cases, highlighting a need for better dispute resolution. Additionally, the domestic supply of critical grid equipment, such as high-voltage transformers, is struggling to keep pace with demand. While wind capacity has grown to 58.14 GW with high component indigenization, the sector remains reliant on imports, with roughly 80 percent of solar and battery components sourced from abroad. Meanwhile, modern solar inverters are evolving to provide essential grid-stability services to support expanding digital infrastructure like data centers.
