Narendra Modi urges expansion of India's Olympic sports participation
Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in the Khelo India Samvaad, a nationwide virtual dialogue held to mark National Sports Day and honor hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand. Addressing athletes and students across thousands of institutions, Modi emphasized the need to build a modern, 21st-century sporting ecosystem to enhance India’s Olympic performance.
Modi noted a “bitter truth” regarding India’s limited participation in Olympic disciplines, stating that the country often competes in only a fraction of available sports. He urged the nation to leverage its geography to develop expertise in non-traditional areas such as surfing, sport climbing, and winter sports to prepare for the 2036 Olympics.
In regional developments, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated a Rs 50 crore National Centre of Excellence (NCoE) for Swimming in Amingaon. The Olympic-standard facility will be managed by the Sports Authority of India (SAI) for 30 years to foster international-standard talent.
