India Olympic 2036 preparation and talent development

Overview

India has begun establishing a strategic framework to support its sporting ambitions for the 2036 Olympics. Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya has called for an accelerated talent identification roadmap, proposing a structured scouting system across schools, districts, and colleges to build a comprehensive repository of high-performing athletes.

To mark National Sports Day 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed youth and athletes through the ‘Khelo India Dialogue – Khel Ki Baat, PM Ke Saath’. Organized by Mera Yuva Bharat (MY Bharat), the initiative involved virtual participation from over 1,500 educational institutions and approximately 800,000 young people across 1,600 locations. The dialogue focused on five core themes: sports, Olympic aspirations, youth leadership, ‘Viksit Bharat’, and ‘Nasha Mukt Yuva’ (substance-free youth).

During the dialogue, Prime Minister Modi outlined a vision to enhance Olympic performance by expanding participation across a wider range of disciplines. He noted that India participated in only 16 of the 32 sports at the 2024 Paris Olympics, identifying this gap as a “bitter truth” that limits the nation’s medal potential. To address this, he emphasized the need to master new areas, including water sports like surfing and winter sports, by leveraging India’s coastline and mountainous regions.

In a regional development supporting these goals, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated a Rs 50 crore National Centre of Excellence (NCoE) for Swimming in Amingaon. This Olympic-standard facility will be managed by the Sports Authority of India (SAI) for 30 years to foster international-standard talent.
