India alcohol industry shifts toward premiumisation
The Indian alcohol industry is undergoing a significant shift from a volume-driven market to one focused on premiumisation and quality. Driven largely by Gen Z consumers, there is increasing demand for premium vodka, beer, tequila, and malts over blended whiskies. Local Indian single malt brands, such as Amrut, Indri, and Paul John, are gaining traction against imported alternatives, which often face high customs duties.
In the corporate sector, Globus Spirits has reported strong financial growth for the June 2026 quarter, with consolidated revenue rising 13% year-on-year to ₹789 crore. The company's profit after tax increased by 49% to ₹28 crore, supported by a 35% growth in its prestige and above (P&A) premium segment. Additionally, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) increased their stake in Globus Spirits by 6.3% during August.
