India and China hold 36th WMCC meeting on border issues in New Delhi

On 6‑7 August, India and China met in New Delhi for the 36th session of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination (WMCC) on border matters. The Indian delegation was led by Joint Secretary Sujit Ghosh (West Asia, Ministry of External Affairs) and the Chinese side was represented by Director‑General Hou Yanqi of the Ministry’s Border and Oceanic Affairs Department.

The talks covered boundary delimitation, border management, mechanism‑building and trans‑border cooperation, with a detailed review of the Line of Actual Control (LAC). Both parties agreed to keep existing diplomatic and military channels active, including WMCC, local commander‑level meetings and other agreed formats, to avoid misunderstandings on the LAC. They also discussed the need for an expert‑level mechanism on trans‑border rivers and the sharing of technical details on upstream projects.

India highlighted recent confidence‑building steps such as the resumption of the Kailash‑Manasarovar pilgrimage and civil‑aviation connectivity. Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Ranveer Jaiswal said, "Both countries' talks are ongoing and moving in a positive direction," and expressed confidence that these measures would strengthen bilateral relations.
