India and China hold 36th WMCC meeting on border issues in New Delhi
On 6 August 2024, India and China met in New Delhi for the 36th session of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on India‑China Border Affairs (WMCC). The Indian delegation was led by Sujit Ghosh, Joint Secretary (East Asia) of the Ministry of External Affairs, while the Chinese side was headed by Hou Yanqi, Director General of the Boundary and Oceanic Affairs Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The talks covered boundary delimitation, border management, mechanism‑building and trans‑border cooperation, and reviewed the situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). Both parties agreed to continue using existing diplomatic and military channels, including WMCC, local commander‑level meetings and other agreed mechanisms, to resolve outstanding issues and avoid misunderstandings.
India reiterated the need to convene the next Expert Level Mechanism meeting on trans‑border rivers and to share technical details on upstream projects. The two countries also highlighted recent people‑to‑people steps such as the resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra and the re‑establishment of civil aviation connectivity. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said these measures would strengthen bilateral ties.
Separately, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu dismissed viral videos claiming a fresh Chinese incursion as false, affirming that the Indian Army maintains control of the territory.
